During Week 3 of Life is Precious from the Culture of Life Studies we studied the book Horton Hears a Who! I was interested how they were going to take this classic Dr. Seuss book and relate it to pro-life issues and I was very impressed with how well it worked with our little ones! The famous line from this book is:
"A person's a person no matter how small" - Horton Hears a Who!
Day 1 of this week was eye opening to all of our children, especially our oldest! We did the fun exercise in the book where you line up everyone in order of their size and then figure out if the taller person is "more important" because they are bigger. Our oldest son proudly said "YES! I am most important!!" Well, then we had him sit down and our youngest stand on a chair and I asked again "So, is the tallest person here the most important?" (now being our youngest child). "NO! Said our oldest, I'm still the most important!" Well, it took some talking to and finally asking if their dad was more important than their grandpa (since their dad is taller) and our son said "No, they are BOTH important!" CLICK! He finally figured out that just because you might be bigger or smaller, older or younger, doesn't make you more or less important! We are ALL important!
We were then able to look at the timeline of human development and realize that even the tiniest baby in their mommy's tummy all of the way to a senior citizen are all important even though they look different!
During Day 2 the theme was all about protecting small people! Our parish church has been participating in the 40 Days for Life and we took some time this day to go pray with them at Planned Parenthood for all of the moms, babies and families. I was really worried about how to talk to our children about this, but ended up just keeping it REALLY basic that we were going to pray for babies and that seemed to be enough for them! I think it is really important to continue slowly exposing them to how we can help protect even the smallest of people including babies in their mommy's tummies!

By Day 3 of this week I was terribly sick and so we took the time this day to watch the movie Horton Hears a Who and relax! This was perfect for all of us! We then talked about loyalty and how Horton is loyal to the Who's even when his friends laugh at him. We talked about how it is important to be nice to everyone and love our neighbor!
Day 4 we discussed how EVERY voice counts! One of the best parts in the story is when the Who's join together making noise and as they say in the curriculum "Sometimes it just takes one more person to speak up in order to protect and save the smallest and weakest persons." We read the story one last time and then took the time to make LOTS of noise with our voices and instruments around the house!
We had a great time with this book and enjoyed really learning about how "A person's a person no matter how small!"
