Fire Prevention Week

Anyone who knows our family loves that we have a lot of little guys who LOVE firemen, so when Fire Prevention Week rolls around it is a big deal at our house!  Part of my husband's job as an EMS Emergency Physician is working directly with community fire departments, so our boys hear a lot about fire men!

This year the most important thing that I wanted to do during Fire Prevention Week was to go over fire safety in our home.  We went through a mock fire drill, talking about where we would go and what we would do if we heard the smoke detector go off in different areas of our home.  We also discussed our "meeting spot" outside of our home of where we would meet as a family if there was a fire in our home.  We have 3 fire extinguishers in our home (in the kitchen, garage and utility room) and we discussed where these are and with our oldest how to use them.  We also talked about how to call 911 on both our home telephone and my cell phone (since sometimes it's hard to get to the numerical buttons to make a call on a cell phone) and we practiced what we would say!  We went over our address and how to ask for help!

We then took the time to get out all of our toys, puzzles, books and costumes that revolve around Fire!  We had a blast playing Firemen and putting out fires, learning about all different kids of fire trucks and even watching one of our favorite movies Planes Fire & Rescue!  Our little ones also watched Barney:  Let's Go to the Firehouse on Amazon!  My husband and I are going out of town for a few days this week, but I left some fun printables and books for my mom to do with the boys while we were away!
