Today, January 22nd is the anniversary of Roe. vs. Wade, when abortion was legalized in the United States. Although we are not able to be in Washington D.C. for the March for Life, we wanted to do something here in our own home to pray for preborn babies. Thankfully, the American Life League's Culture of Life Studies Program has a fantastic activity to teach young children about this important issue!
This lesson takes the great book The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle and goes over these great three objectives: how the ladybug got its name, reinforcing the importance of prayer (especially through the intercession of Our Lady as we pray the rosary), and instilling in children the importance of becoming "Ladybug Warriors" who defend preborn children.
We read The Grouchy Ladybug, then read the story of the Meaning of the Name Ladybug. Our boys really enjoyed learning how farmers in the Middle Ages prayed to Our Lady to help them with their crops and that the ladybugs or "Beetles of Our Lady" were the answer to their prayers when they arrived and ate the pests that were ruining their crops! The Culture of Life Study Program included fantastic discussion questions that we went over for reading and story comprehension.
We then became our own "prayer warriors" using our most important secret weapon, the Rosary! We prayed the Rosary together for all preborn babies.
Next, we did the fun craft of the Ladybug Prayer for Preborn Babies Prayer Cards. We had a lot of fun with this little hands on lesson putting everything together with the story of the ladybug and prayer!
We have been participating in Holy Heroes Spiritual Adoption for the past 9 months and it has also been a great way for our children to learn about and understand the importance of praying for preborn babies. Finally, we went to our parish Adoration Chapel to spend some time with Jesus and pray for all of the babies.
