Our sweet Samuel Nicholas has been in Heaven for one year. It has been a year full of ups and downs, but most importantly it has been a year of learning how to trust in God. As we were approaching the anniversary of our son's death I was saddened to find out that my husband was going to be out of town. I prayed to God trying to figure out what I was supposed to do to get through the day without my best friend and partner. Well, learning to trust in God he came through big time. A few days later I got an e-mail that our homeschool group was hosting a women's silent retreat, and it just so happened to be on the same day as Samuel's anniversary of his death. Thank you God for answering my prayer and being with me on this special day! My mom was sweet enough to watch our other children so I could spend a day in prayer.
I thought that it might be a day of sadness, but it ended up being a truly beautiful day. I was able to spend time in Eucharistic Adoration, go to confession, attend Mass and lots of quiet time in prayer. As a mother of four little children, silence is not something that I have often, so it was a true gift. It was a huge reminder that I need to continue to trust in God and that He is always here for us and answering our prayers.
Once my husband came home we spent time the next day after Mass at the cemetery praying for our Samuel Nicholas as a family. I know that our goal as parents is to teach and guide each of our children to live holy lives here on Earth to gain eternity in Heaven. Samuel is a special part of each of our lives and I look forward for the day when we are all reunited together in Heaven.
Samuel 1:24-28: I prayed for this child, and the Lord
granted my request. Now I, in turn, give him to the Lord."
