Lenten Reading & Giveaway

Spiritual reading is always a special part of my day and helps me focus and strengthen my relationship with God.  I loved the selections that I had for reading during Advent and Christmas this past year and I am equally excited for the choices that I have picked for this season of Lent.  Here are my selections for this year:

1.  Blessed is She Lenten Journal:  I used the Blessed is She Advent Journal and also follow their daily e-mails of the Daily Readings and Reflections and simply LOVE all of their resources.  The journals are simple enough to only take about 15-20 minutes each day and they include the perfect questions to dive deeper into God's word and how it relates in your life.  I was so sad when Christmas was over and the Advent journal was finished, so I was thrilled to hear that they have made a Lenten Journal.

2.  Lenten Reflections from a Father Who Keeps His Promises & Signs of Life by Scott Hahn:
I love both Scott and Kimberly Hahn, and so many of their books have helped both myself and my family understand and defend the faith.  I loved Scott Hahn's new book Joy to the World that I read during Advent and am excited to start his Lenten Reflections book.  Lenten Reflections from a Father Who Keeps his Promises discusses the covenant that God has with us and has a daily scripture verse, reflection, prayer and question to deepen our faith as we prepare for Easter.  Signs of Life is a book that goes through 40 different topics within the Catholic Faith and discusses their significance.  Lent is a great time to read a chapter a day to grow in deeper understanding of the Catholic Church.

3.  Lent at Ephesus:  This is not a book but instead an amazing selection of the most beautiful music from the Benedictines of Mary Queen of Apostles.  It is acapella and peaceful to listen to during prayer time, around the house or in the car.  This music truly refocuses your heart, mind and soul on the Lord which is such a gift during the Lenten season.

Also, if you are getting Lent at Ephesus, you might want to look into getting Easter at Ephesus which is their new Easter CD!  It will be released in March 2015 but you can pre-order it now!  I am so excited to get my copy soon.

  2. I am so excited for lent this year with my almost three year old! We loved the Jesse tree, so now we are planning on doing the lenten version and readings, walking the outdoor stations of the cross, making playdough cross scenes, a good deeds jar (if my son can grasp it), and we hope to visit the holy family shrine before it is decorated for Easter

  7. You have listed great resources Nicole! The music you mention sounds great! To be honest I have trouble staying awake with anything I read :( Maybe if I win this giveaway it will be my jump start to read and reflect more! Mostly, we do alot of Lenten traditions centered around our family and kids. I need to really focus more on "me" time with Lenten practices! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

    1. Thanks Tracy! The CD is fantastic, and great to even have playing as the kids are doing their school! I agree that so often I focus on the kids that I NEED to prioritize ways for me to deepen my own faith!

  8. I will definitely be listening to my "Lent at Ephesus" CD! I also will read something, but I haven't narrowed it down! I will go on a silent retreat, too. As for practices with my family, that is TBD! Thank you for a chance to win this beautiful journal!

  9. Thanks for your post! I'm abstaining from sugar treats and limiting media, and attending daily mass as frequently as possible, and as a family we're avoiding carbonated beverages and praying the rosary weekly.

  10. These are great suggestions! I'm going to order the Lent at Ephesus CD as we love their Advent one. As a family we do a mercy cross, and a prayer chain with a different person listed on it that we pray for each day, and last year we did the Little Purple book for kids which I really liked. (I don't like the one for adults though) As for me, I always struggle. Especially if I'm pregnant or nursing, and this year I'm newly pregnant and it's a struggle to make it through some days. So I'm going to take a little bit more of a simple and easy approach this year in hopes that I actually stick with it. We are also going to read through the Little Oratory in our moms group for Lent as well, based off of your review of it!

    1. I think it is good for us mommas to give ourselves a break when we are pregnant/nursing. That is the time to add extra things instead of taking away, even if it is a small prayer, etc. I am so glad to hear you are going to read The Little Oratory with your mom's group! It is such a wonderful book! Thanks for sharing!

  12. I plan on doing the "best lent ever" and also focusing on fasting from things besides meat that pertain to food....and working on not eating to satiation. It will be a good lent! Thank you for this list! I am going to look into the journal for myself-I have been having a tug at my heart to do more reading and reflecting! What a perfect resource!!!
